DIMITRA

BOGRI

Dimitra Bogri is a fiber artist born in Greece, where her creative journey began in early childhood. From a young age, she was drawn to making, experimenting, and transforming materials into visual expression. At the age of 27, she moved to Virginia, USA, continuing to develop her artistic voice through textile techniques. She currently lives and works in New Jersey.

Dimitra uses crochet in a non-traditional way, redefining the boundaries between craft and fine art. Working primarily with yarn and thread, she creates portraits and landscapes that emphasize texture, depth, and emotion. Her practice explores the expressive possibilities of fiber, transforming a traditional domestic technique into a contemporary visual language.

Her work is rooted in Freeform crochet and Painterly crochet — intuitive techniques that allow the image to emerge organically through the process of making. Rather than following patterns, drawings, or sketches, Dimitra builds each piece stitch by stitch, blending colors directly with yarn as a painter would with brush and pigment. This approach allows form, tone, and character to gradually develop through careful observation and instinct.

Alongside her fine art practice, Dimitra also enjoys designing and creating handmade jewelry and crochet handbags. These smaller-scale works allow her to explore texture, structure, and material in a more functional form, while maintaining the same attention to craftsmanship and aesthetic detail. She also loves embroidery and sewing.

Through her work, Dimitra challenges conventional perceptions of crochet, presenting textile as a medium capable of capturing complex visual narratives. Her pieces balance structure and spontaneity, merging technical precision with artistic intuition.
