Freeform Crochet Textile Portrait
This original textile portrait was created in 2018 for the Crochet Guild of America Design Competition and represents one of the artist’s earliest explorations into freeform crochet portraiture.
The piece was created without the use of a pattern, grid, or reference image. Instead, the composition emerged intuitively through a process of visual imagination, allowing the portrait to develop organically as each stitch was formed. This intuitive method reflects the essence of freeform crochet — a practice guided by creative instinct rather than predefined structure.
Constructed using acrylic yarn and a variety of crochet hook sizes, the work combines sculptural texture with expressive color placement. The iconic lightning motif becomes reinterpreted through fiber, transforming thread into a dimensional drawing that balances structure and spontaneity.
In 2024, the piece was selected for exhibition in Aging Passage of Life, a curated exhibition exploring transformation, memory, and identity across time.
This work marks the beginning of an ongoing series investigating portraiture through textile, where traditional crochet techniques evolve into a contemporary visual language.
