This textile portrait was created in 2020 as part of the artist’s continuing exploration of portraiture through freeform crochet. Using only yarn, hook, and intuition, the image was constructed stitch by stitch without reliance on a traditional crochet pattern.
The portrait is composed using ten different shades of grey, carefully layered to create depth, light, and shadow. A bold red accent highlights the iconic lips, creating a strong focal point while preserving the balance between realism and abstraction. Through the interplay of tone and texture, the work transforms fiber into a sculptural drawing, where each stitch functions as both structure and gesture.
Created using wool yarn and a variety of crochet hook sizes, the piece reflects the artist’s interest in pushing the boundaries of textile techniques into the realm of contemporary portrait art. The monochromatic palette allows texture and contrast to define form, emphasizing expression through material rather than line.
In 2024, the artwork was selected for group exhibitions People Gallerium Art and Woman Exhibizone, highlighting themes of identity, femininity, and cultural memory.
This piece continues the artist’s investigation of how traditional craft practices can evolve into modern visual language through experimentation and intuition.
